this would be a wonderful film to watch in the cinema with a big screen, great speakers and a full bar - but sadly it's also the kind of film you need to make sure you stay away from until it releases in a few days time. i'd imagine some people will be a little disappointed by the actual content, which largely plays out as a bunch of superheroes battling it out, doing exactly what you'd expect from a superhero movie, save for the fact that they're all women. however, the fights were more than passable, the cast were all convincing, the costumes were pretty fabulous and i really, really like the score. but i think the real problem with this film is that the female characters aren't very well developed. they're very much a collection of stereotypes and tropes. they're all blonde, they're all "damsel in distress" types, they're all "moral authority figures" who always speak in monosyllables and they're all very, very "attractive". it's not that they don't have their own personalities and their own unique traits, but they're pretty much always at the mercy of the men in their lives. and they have no agency whatsoever in that scenario. they're just there to be rescued, and to have their man's problems solved. it's a pretty one-sided story, and the women are pretty much there to prop up the boys.it's also very much "women-in-superhero-costumes-are-sexy-because-they-can-kick-ass" territory. this is not an empowering film, not a film that's going to make you feel empowered. it's just an entertaining flick, and this is a pretty good place to start if you're looking for some escapist entertainment. (6/10) (spoiler alert: the main villain is a woman, played by jennifer lawrence. the x-men are led by mystique, played by jessica chastain. the female antagonist, who is obsessed with apocalypse, is played by emma frost. the female hero is jean grey, who is a character from the comics and who plays a larger role in this movie. so not only are the female characters underdeveloped, they're also very stereotypical, and their involvement in the story is very slight. the film is full of references to comic books and the x-men, but they're not really developed into anything other than a bunch of stereotypes. the villains are more interesting, but that's about it.)
